change of pace
well, morning temps were negative ten – fahrenheit – so i packed gear (again) and opted for some treadmill miles at lunch. i was fortunate to get a "good" treadmill and began my warm up…
1st 1/4 mile 6.0 mph
2nd 6.5 mph
3rd 7.0 mph
4th 7.5 mph
i then upped the speed by 0.2 mph each quarter mile until i reached 10.3 mph (5:50 pace) which got me to 4.5 miles. (honestly, i thought the treadmill would max out at 10 mph…it must be a "spinal tap" model) i then backed down the speed to 8.0 mph for the last 1.5 miles to cool down. overall, i mustered 6 miles in a few ticks less than 44 minutes. not a bad effort.
ten toes – thank you very much
i was passed an article about a competitor in an ultra race last weekend who is likely to lose two frostbitten toes. another friend of mine said he had a slight bit of frostbite as well for his saturday effort. as wimpy as it sounds, i’m grateful to have some indoor options available to me. i’d really like to avoid nicknames such as "eight-toe cameron" or worse!
regardless, the arctic conditions continue to persist as morning temps hovered around zero. i brought gear and ran another 6 miles on the treadmill in 48 minutes and hit the shower.

back to hamster miles
the region was the lucky recipient of a fresh batch of snow. rather than muttering under my breath while running along un-shoveled sidewalks i hit the treadmill at lunch. the effort was rather dull, even with the ipod and television. the specific treadmill that i had was quite noisy on every footstrike, which isn’t like my efforts on terra firma. regardless, i managed 6 miles in 48 minutes and hit the shower.
fresh air
i was awake a bit late last night so i opted to bring along gear and run during lunch. i’ve been indoors quite a bit as of late and am a bit bored with either running in place or in circles. therefore, i headed outside with temps in the low teens and put one foot in front of the other. a light snow was falling which slowed my pace a bit. in the end, i managed 6 miles in a few ticks above 51 minutes.
round-n-round he goes
i rolled myself out of bed this AM and headed for the pettit for my morning constitutional. the facility opened at 6AM and i was one of the first in the door. i paid my $3 and hit the track. some folks were setting up for day 2 of a speedskating meet and one section of the running track was being used for officials. as i looped around, more and more skaters showed up and began warming up in various ways. some rode stationary bikes while others jogged around the track or did plyometric exercises. i pretty much steered clear of the skaters as i was just a runner in a skater facility. overall, i ended up with 68 minutes of running which i’ll estimate to be 8 miles.
