left turn running

the morning broke with a temp of negative 3. knowing about the artic blast ahead of time, i made arrangements to meet dana over at the pettit center for some indoor running. i got there a little before 7AM and started a slow run to get the legs moving. dana got there on time and caught up with me as we ran laps around the skating oval on the running track. the facility was very busy as they were running a speedskating meet and there were plenty of runners looking for a warmer place to run. i ended up with 90 minutes of running which i’ll say is 10.5 miles (roughly 8:30 pace). more than likely i’ll have to head back to the pettit to run tomorrow morning as it’s still going to be awful cold in the badger state.

hamster miles ala ESPN

i "slept in" until 5:45AM today and brought gear to run during lunch. the gym was a bit more crowded than i expected for a friday. i ended up with 5 miles in a few ticks over 40 minutes, like i did yesterday. the television was tuned to espn, which was a bit more tolerable than the news. the tough part was continuing to run straight while watching the highlights of hockey and football. my tendency is to follow the players weaving back and forth…which isn’t advisable on a treadmill.

more hamster miles

during the noon hour i hopped on a treadmill and put in another 5 miles in a few ticks more than 40 minutes. efforts like that are where an ipod can be real handy to combat the boredom of running in place. regardless, miles are miles…and the more of ’em you run the faster you’ll be.

my morning constitutional

temps were around 30 degrees this morning, which is downright balmy for this time of the year. my route started out east on madison toward downtown then angled south to bethesda park then west along the glacial drumlin trail back into my subdivision. overall, it was a fairly uneventful effort. the only thing of significance happened in the last mile when i was listening to a song on my ipod that i wasn’t familiar with. my brother bought me a cd that i (admittedly) haven’t listened too very often. one of the songs came up on the shuffle and was pretty good so i didn’t skip past it. late in the song, there was a voice over the music saying "hello…" that spooked the heck out of me. my head spun around to spot who the heck is saying hello to me in the wee hours of the morning. needless to say i felt rather foolish and skipped the rest of the song. i ended up with 7 miles at a little less than 8:30 pace and hit the shower.

hamster miles at noon

since i missed a few days…i opted to get on the treadmill at noon. i actually took a moment to stretch a bit before starting as i needed to wait for an open machine. for the first mile i got a chance to talk with ben who just returned from R-n-R AZ 26.2 with a brand new pr. i ended up with 6 miles in 48:30 and hit the shower. a few of the regulars commented that it must be cold if i was running inside. they were a bit surprised when i said i had run 6 miles this morning. funny stuff.
