weekend report
on friday, i didn’t get out to run until the late afternoon. temps were easily in the 80’s with a bright sun to bake my skin to a golden brown. i headed down and back to bethesda park. i spotted jamie riding around in his van and said hello.
saturday morning, i was out the door at 6:30AM for a long run. the first hour i ran fine, a little slower than 8:30 pace. coming back, i noticed the familiar "squish-squish" sounds of my shoes being waterlogged from sweat and began to slow. i ended up doing some walking and made it back home for 14 miles. after a cold shower, i noticed some cramping in my feet and calves…a sure sign of dehydration. i’ve got to get out the door an hour earlier for these long runs…or hope for some less humid weather.
i took the day off from running on sunday. honestly, i didn’t feel like it.
this morning i ran out (30:00) and back (28:00) on the glacial drumlin trail for 7 miles.

rain, rain, go away
with the relative downpour this AM, i opted to get a few more minutes of shut eye.
while perusing the internet, i’ve found some fun stuff.
first, the site WeAreNotJoggers.com announces loud and clear the delineation between runners and joggers. among other motivational tidbits, the site cites the use of an mp3 player as a tell-tale sign of a jogger. not a bad effort by Pearl Izumi for marketing efforts. there’s a contest that you can enter to win free shoes for life…which i dropped my name in the hat for. i may be an Asics fan…but free is free.
second, i found athlinks.com which is a very "web 2.0" site that has a really neat feature. race results are accumulated at the site and you can create a profile and claim your race results. you can then ask the site to find "rivals" in the form of other runners between a configurable age/geography range. i was able to pull up a list of over 280 potential "rivals" and narrowed it down to about a dozen guys i know from the local running scene. it was interesting because the site provided a Won/Lost stat in terms of when you had raced against these rivals. way cool.
finally, a friendly reminder that no matter how warm it is outside – keep your clothes on. Priest Nabbed While Running Nude.

freestyle running
this morning it was so humid outside that it felt like i was swimming. i started shortly before 5AM and headed down madison, turning left on moreland and another left on delafield. at 3.5 miles i turned around with 31:30 elapsed…which is awfully slow. i headed back along the same route and thankfully a bit of a breeze was around. i rolled back in 28:30, walked a few hundred feet on my street and hit the shower.
between the heat and the humidity, running in august is difficult so far, i’m up to 57 miles month to date. ideally, i’d like to be in the 220-240 range for the month.
call it a nooner
there were thunderstorms rolling through my neighborhood this morning so i packed a duffel with the intent of running at lunch. by the time the noon hour rolled around, temps were at 80 degrees and the humidity was up as well. i headed out to the north and ran the first 3M in about 25 minutes. i turned around and caught a nice headwind for the route home, which took 24 minutes. admittedly, i was soaked to the bone with sweat and – for a moment – considered taking a dip in the fountain to cool off. thinking better of it, i just hit the shower and grabbed something from the lunchroom.
sat, sun and mon
saturday morning i got out and ran 9M in roughly 8:10 pace. mercifully it was overcast as i didn’t get out until 8AM. after showering, we headed to the greater green bay area to hang out with my wife’s side of the family.
sunday morning i got out the door shortly before 7AM and put in 7M in roughly 8:20 pace. i ran along the fox river on a bike/pedestrian path. surprisingly, there were lots of other folks running/biking along. heading in, i got rained on for the last 10 minutes or so.
this morning i ran 7M up university and back. i covered the first 3.5M in 31:00 and the second 3.5M in 27:30. i figure i’m sleepwalking though the first 2 or 3 miles when i’m out the door at 5AM.
