up and at ’em
i slowly rolled myself from my nice warm bed this morning, geared up and headed out the door. temperatures were in the lower teens with little to no wind. as i ran along a five mile route i did notice that the roads were a bit better than when i ran on sunday – – but still a long way from being truly safe to run on. midway through my run, my gps watch battery quit on me so i didn’t get a time for the effort.
on a positive note, over the past weekend i did find a USB cable to connect my gps watch to my computer so it would charge – – and download the collected data. for awhile i had been charging the watch with a cord that was intended to be used for blackberry’s while in a car, using the cigarette lighter outlet.
regardless, i finished the effort and headed in for a hot shower. without the wind, it was actually fairly comfortable running this morning. i find it amazing what you can adapt to.
speaking of adapting, it appears that we’ll be expecting a new addition to our family in August 2009. (surprise!) soon we’ll have enough kids to field a relay team – – although it’s way too early to know if it’ll be a girls or mixed team.
in an effort to conserve cash, i’ll be skipping the Boston Marathon in 2009. it might be a good thing to skip Boston as i’m still rather gimpy. (i could run down a list of the aches and pains but i’m not really into that.) i’ll likely focus on wisconsin events for 2009, including perhaps a late-spring marathon. candidate marathons would include Green Bay, Cheesehead (Kenosha) and Madison (in order of likelihood). any of the three would give me to late february to get my miles up to a level to justify starting a 12 week marathon training program.
icy shuffle
we received a batch of freezing rain overnight that coated a majority of sidewalks and some portions of the roads. i ventured out late in the afternoon, hoping that the city would salt the particularly bad areas…which unfortunately didn’t happen. i ended up running a 5 mile out-and-back route along university avenue and hitting the shower. honestly, i didn’t want to chance taking a fall or have a car slide into me while i was running in the road.
windy start to the day
the alarm sounded at a little before 5AM to rouse me for a morning constitutional. a quick check of weather.com told me that the temps were in the mid-20’s and that the wind was howling from the west. to be honest, i didn’t need a computer to tell me about the wind as i could hear it outside. regardless, i donned my gear and headed out the door. i ended up running down comanche then up university until i had covered 2.5 miles then i did a 180 and headed for home. the roads were nearly snow/ice free here in waukesha compared to where my in-laws live. some people complain about our property taxes but to be honest when they do as good of a job cleaning up after the white stuff…i really can’t complain.

first of the year
temps were into the teens in the morning so i geared up and headed out for a quick five miler before brunch. roughly speaking, i ran yesterday’s route in reverse with a few variations. i really didn’t run really fast due to the packed snow but it did feel good to get the year started on the right foot…literally.

last run of ’08
it was awful cold up in the greater green bay area (at my in-laws) so i waited until the early afternoon for the temperatures to get to the upper single digits. i geared up and initially headed out along the fox river to see if the recreation trail had been plowed out. unfortunately it was snow covered so i made a turn west along a boulevard and headed to the outskirts of town. i then headed south toward the grocery store then zig-zagged east through a residential part of town. overall, i ended up with 5.5 miles and hit the shower.
