up and at em
i rolled myself out of my warm bed and geared up for a morning constitutional with temps in the mid-teens. my route was my five mile loop that has three significant hills to navigate. overall, the footing was pretty good as there was a thin layer of snow over the iced over streets. the real danger is running over sections of iced roads that don’t have the snow cover as that’s where you’ll take a spill. regardless, it felt good to get out and about this morning.
my dad started his own running blog at http://tomsrunningtoday.blogspot.com. at the moment, he’s "on the shelf" as he working with his doctor(s) to diagnose the cause of chest pressure he experienced while running the Lakefront Marathon this fall. regardless, i’m looking forward to reading his insights. we talk regularly about all things running and on occasion we actually agree. now that he’s blogging, maybe i’ll be able to read excerpts from his yet to be published book on running.

i woke up a bit late this morning but still opted to gear up for a bit of morning slip-n-slide in the icy remnants of our first significant snowfall of the year. i ran in the street as it was likely the best footing i could ask for – – thanks to the snowplows. my route took me down comanche then up university until i reached two miles which is when i made a 180 for home. heading back home it was a bit brisk as i was running into a significant wind while the temps were in the teens. regardless, i got in four miles and hit the shower.
gotta wear shades
i slept in today and slowly got up the motivation to gear up for a run. while the temperature was in the lower 20’s, it was a sunny morning so i grabbed my sunglasses (and ipod) on my way out of the door. my route took me down comanche, out on the glacial drumlin trail then back home. on the trail i got to say hello to a guy i had frequently seen in the morning this summer. heading back home i caught the scent of someone cooking up breakfast, which gave me some extra motivation to get home.
after a quick breakfast i went back outside and dropped "winterizer" on my lawn. honestly, it was a heck of an effort as there was about an inch or two of snow on most of my lawn. regardless, the snow made it easy for me to see where i had been before so that in the spring my lawn shouldn’t be "striped."
try, try again
i’ve been battling a virus for most of this week. today was the first day that i felt close to normal so i geared up for a morning constitutional. temps were in the mid-30’s and the sky was clear. i ran down comanche then up university avenue. after 2.5 miles, i did a 180 and headed for home. honestly, with as little as i’ve been running, the effort felt laborious. it’s hard to explain, but when my training is regular and consistent it feels as though i’m on "auto-pilot" when i run. regardless, my focus is to get habitual with my running again. thankfully, my weight hasn’t skyrocketed during this downtime which will make it easier to return to form.
getting back on the wagon
this morning i geared up and headed out for five miles in the freshly fallen snow. i opted for my trail running shoes and the footing was pretty good as the snow was the heavy/wet variety. admittedly, i’ve been enjoying my time off from running as i’ve been able to stay up later in the evening and sleep in a bit more in the morning. regardless, with the holiday season approaching i need to burn calories or else i’ll begin to resemble saint nick.
