long time no blog
i’ve been taking some down time from running as of late. the only running i’ve done since the 50K was 5 miles on 11/13 and 5 more on 11/17. it’s amazing how quickly a body "de-trains" as i really feel like i’m slogging along at a very pedestrian pace. additionally, i’ve got a few assorted tendons that are a bit sore after each of those easy 5 mile efforts. essentially, i think it’s my body’s way of telling me to ease off for a bit and let it heal up before launching into another training cycle.
i still need to make the time to write my race report from the chicago 50k. i really prefer to write it as quick as possible after the event but have been a bit busy with other stuff as of late.
Chicago 50K

13th overall – 6th 30-39
2nd best road 50K effort (PR – 4:10:36)
3 lap course
first loop 1:18:36 — so far so good
second loop 1:25:32 (2:44:08) – – uh-oh…
third loop 1:45:24 – – game over man, game over
awesome medal but a purple technical shirt with white script lettering…very weak.
MTD – 31.1 miles
YTD – 1,673 miles
Odometer – 28,011 miles

wednesday i opted for a few extra z’s and slept in. today i geared up and headed out with temps in the lower 30’s. i ended up running another untimed five miles and hit the shower. the weather forecast for chicago on saturday looks very favorable with temps in the 50’s. i’ll sleep in on friday morning and make every effort to get to bed early on friday night. saturday morning i’ll drive down to CHI for the 8:30AM start. fun stuff, eh?

i ran another untimed five miles this morning and got to thinking about my running odometer. i’ll be rolling 28,000 miles this weekend during my chicago 50k effort. assuming i aim for 2,000 miles of running per year i’ll be on track for 30,000 miles before the end of 2009. neat stuff.
weekend update
well, it’s going to be a pretty short update as i didn’t run on friday, saturday or sunday. we were over in michigan for my brother’s wedding and i didn’t make the time to get out and run. truth be told, i was gearing up on saturday morning to go for a run but my kids wanted me to go swimming with them in the hotel pool instead. i guess my choice says i’m a dad first and a runner second.
i found a new pic from my 2008 Lakefront Marathon effort which was taken at around 19M. note to self: work on the abs before wearing compression shirt.
this morning i got in an easy five miles and felt better as the run went along. i’m signed up for the chicago 50k this saturday so i’ll be taking it easy in preparation for it. at the moment, i’m not real excited about grinding out another 31 mile effort but i did pay the $40 entry fee and the weather looks reasonable.
last week, my friend Ben (who is signed up for the chicago 50k too) bounced me a visualization of my marathon and ultra efforts on a US map. seeing it got me thinking about putting together a timeline of sorts for my marathon/ultras or perhaps for my 18 years of running. we’ll see.
