a bit brisk
i didn’t get out to run on monday and had to be in to work early on tuesday so i brought along gear to run in during the noon hour. temps were right around 40 degrees with a wind off the lake. i ran six miles in a few ticks less than 49 minutes and hit the (warm) shower. my buddy dana is skipping the green bay 26.2 so i’m likely going to opt for the ice age trail 50k. registration runs until sunday and there are only 105 folks who’ve opted in.
weekend wrap-up
i got out for 7 miles on saturday afternoon and another 7 miles on sunday afternoon. admittedly, my training motivation is a bit low and it’s really time to race. more than likely it looks like i’ll pony up for the Ice Age Trail 50K on May 10th.
one thing i’ve been running through my head is if i should wear my spiked shoes out on the trails or if i’d be better off in lightweight road shoes. when i’ve ran the 50M event, i was just fine with the lightweight road shoes. actually, i had worn some trail shoes and had to change out of them at an aid station as they were causing blisters.
regardless, i did pass 700 miles for the year on sunday which isn’t too bad.
morning constitutional
i got myself out the door shortly past 5AM and rolled down the hill on comanche. temps were around 60 degrees and it was a bit breezy. i headed east on the glacial drumlin trail. along the trail i passed a rather marshy section that was awfully noisy between the frogs and birds. i turned around in bethesda park and doubled back on my outbound course. in the end, i mustered 7 miles in a little more than 58 minutes.
off the reservation
i got out during lunch and ran with a co-worker for 5 miles. i didn’t get a great night of sleep last night as my youngest woke up a few times during the night. regardless, getting in a few easy miles was still better than taking a zero for the day.
dirty bird
i took the day off on monday, from running and work. my youngest has had a virus and wasn’t up to going to the sitter. we stayed home and watched the boston marathon…live. she slept through the early stages of the race but was awake for – and watched intently – the final miles of the womens race. two ladies battled their way through the final miles with one narrowly winning by 2 seconds at the finish. after watching the mens finish as well as lance armstrong’s effort, we went outside for some fresh air.
i brought along some gear today and ran 5 miles at lunch. temps were in the mid-50’s and it was raining a little bit. some other guys in the locker room opted to stay indoors just because of the rain. i guess they’d melt. the only real significant thing that happened was that i narrowly dodged being "bombed" by a bird that was perched in the tree as i ran under it.
some other random thoughts…
- running 6:28 per mile for 5K after 20M at ~7:40 per mile isn’t too bad…even if i got stuck with an official time of 20:00.
- bill, my nemesis from the Racine 30K ran the 5K at just under 6:00 per mile. in hindsight, i was smart to take him out fast at the 30K last year.
- saturday’s 20M + 5K effort put me over 27,000 miles on my running odometer. talk about doing it in style!
- you can read ryan’s thoughts on the 20M + 5K at Race report: How not to prepare for a race
- i’m not sure what i’ll race next…either the Ice Age Trail 50K on May 10th or the Green Bay 26.2 on May 18th.
